About Hatfield-McCoy Trails

The Hatfield-McCoy Trails are a premier off-road recreational trail system spanning approximately 700 miles primarily across southern West Virginia, with some portions extending into eastern Kentucky. This extensive network features a variety of terrain including mountainous forests, river valleys, and logging roads, providing a diverse riding experience suited for all skill levels. Established in 2000 to promote economic development and outdoor recreation in the coalfield region, the trails wind through parts of the Appalachian Mountains characterized by steep ridges, dense hardwood forests, and scenic waterways. The trail system is named after the historic Hatfield and McCoy families, famous for their Appalachian feud, and offers riders a chance to explore land steeped in cultural heritage. Wildlife in the area includes white-tailed deer, black bears, turkeys, and numerous songbirds, contributing to the outdoor experience. The Hatfield-McCoy Trails are popular among ATV, dirt bike, and side-by-side enthusiasts who seek well-maintained, marked paths that range from smooth cruiser trails to challenging technical sections. The network is maintained by the Hatfield-McCoy Regional Recreation Authority and includes multiple trailheads with amenities such as parking, fueling stations, and lodging. Annual events, guided tours, and local businesses support riders with services, while the natural setting offers scenic views and opportunities for photography and nature observation. The trail system plays a key role in the region's tourism economy while encouraging responsible riding practices and environmental stewardship. Visitors come not only for the thrilling rides but also to experience the unique Appalachian culture and hospitality of southern West Virginia and eastern Kentucky.
